Why We Don’t Always Treat Where It Hurts

Pain is one of the body’s most sophisticated communication systems, yet most people (and many practitioners) still treat it like a simple local problem. At Webster Body Therapy in Hovås, we see this every day: clients point to their lower back, shoulder, or knee and say, “It hurts right here,” only to discover the true driver lies several links away in the kinetic chain.
The science is clear. Fascia - the continuous three-dimensional connective tissue matrix that surrounds every muscle, organ, nerve, and blood vessel - doesn’t respect arbitrary body-region boundaries. A restriction in the thoracolumbar fascia or diaphragm can refer tension and pain into the neck or shoulder. Hip flexor tightness from prolonged sitting can create compensatory patterns that manifest as “knee pain” months later. This is why fascia treatment and myofascial release techniques, which Scott is specially trained in through the Stecco Institute in Italy, map specific points along myofascial sequences rather than chasing symptoms.
Nearly two decades of treating athletes and everyday clients have taught Scott that the body is a tensegrity structure - everything is connected under tension. When one area loses glide or mobility, the entire system compensates, often far from the original irritation. Central sensitization can then amplify the signal, making the pain feel more intense or widespread than the tissue damage would suggest.
What this looks like in real life: One client arrived with chronic right shoulder pain that had lasted eight months despite physiotherapy and cortisone injections. Assessment revealed significant restrictions in the left thoracic spine, diaphragm, and ipsilateral hip capsule - classic compensatory patterns from an old ankle sprain. After a series of targeted fascia treatment sessions combined with breathwork and realignment drills, the shoulder pain disappeared completely. We never directly “treated” the shoulder.
At Webster Body Therapy we don’t guess. Pain Therapy Sessions appointments include thorough whole-body assessment so we can release the true restrictions and restore glide along the fascial lines. Clients often leave saying, “I can’t believe you worked on my hip and my shoulder feels free.”
Practical takeaway: Next time pain appears, resist the urge to rub or stretch only the painful spot. Notice what happens when you gently move the areas above and below. If symptoms persist, book a proper physical therapy assessment for lasting pain relief.
